Embracing Your Unique Journey — What “Wicked” Teaches Us About Identity, Grace, and Calling
If you’ve ever seen the Broadway hit Wicked, you know it flips the script on what it means to be “good” or “bad.” In our At the Movies sermon series, Pastor B used this powerful story to remind us that God's view of us often looks very different from how the world sees us — or how we see ourselves.
It might seem strange to talk about Wicked in church, but stories like this can help us star t deeper conversations about how God works in our lives. In Wicked , Elphaba is judged for how she looks, misunderstood for what she believes, and rejected for standing up for what’s right. Sound familiar? Her story mirrors the tension many of us feel when we try to live out our faith in a complicated world.
For those who are new to Christianity or curious about what it means to follow Jesus, we’ve created a 3 - day Bible reading plan that walks you through some of these same themes: identity, transformation, and integrity.
Embracing Your Unique Journey: A 3 - Day Bible Reading Plan for New Believers
Welcome to the start of an exciting journey! Whether you’ve just made the decision to follow Christ or are exploring what it means to be a believer, this 3 - day pla n will help you see how God works in the lives of people — especially those who feel like outsiders. Just like Elphaba in Wicked , God can use your story in powerful ways.
Day 1: God Sees Your Heart
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1 – 13 (NLT)
When Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel, even he was surprised at who God chose. David was the youngest son, out tending sheep, overlooked by his own family. But God told Samuel, “People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Why This Matters:
It’s easy to feel like we’re not good enough or like we don’t belong. But God sees past all that. He sees your heart, your potential, and your purpose — even when others don’t.
Reflect:
Have you ever felt misunderstood or overlooked? How does knowing that God sees your heart encourage you today?
Day 2: Transformation Awaits
Scripture: Acts 9:1 – 22 (NLT)
Saul was known for persecuting Christians — until he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. That experience transformed him into Paul, one of the most influential leaders in the early Church.
Why This Matters:
Your past doesn’t disqualify you from God’s purpose. In fact, it might be part of what shapes your calling. Like Paul, God can take your broken pieces and use them for something incredible.
Reflect:
What parts of your story do you think are “too far gone”? What would it look like to let God reshape those parts into something meaningful?
Day 3: Stand Strong with Integrity
Scripture: Matthew 5:10 – 16 (NLT)
Jesus reminds us th at following Him won’t always be popular. He says, “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right... You are the light of the world.”
Why This Matters:
Doing the right thing might not win you applause, but it will bring you peace and purpose. Like Elphaba, when you stay true to what you know is right, even in the face of rejection, you shine the light of God’s love.
Reflect:
Have you felt pressure to hide your faith or compromise your values? How can you stand firm and be a light where you are?
Final Thoughts
This reading plan is just the beginning. Faith is a journey — full of ups and downs, questions and discoveries. Like Elphaba in Wicked, you may find yourself misunderstood, but you are not alone. God sees you, loves you, and is walking with you.
